World Gliding Championships

The World Gliding Championships for Standard, 15m and Club Class gliders is a Class1 International Aviation Sporting Event sanctioned by the FAI and Gliding Australia.

An aviation racing event in which highly sophisticated unpowered sailplanes (gliders) race each day around a specified course which varies each day. The winners are the gliders that fly the course in the shortest time and the highest speed.

Tasks are routinely set at between 300 to 600 klms each and winning speeds are generally between 125 and 150 kph

This World Class Event has attracted over 70 pilot entries from international pilots from more than 20 countries. Each country will attend with a team of up to 6 pilots, 12 crew (2 per pilot), plus weather, strategy and communications specialists, a Team Captain and a Manager. About 24 people per team means a total of 480 competition members plus their family and friends. The competition organisers number over 50 people and there are expected to be several hundred onsite visitors and spectators.
